battlefield blunder

someone has to be out there who can tell me. one of my best friends has battlefield 1492 and i know want to get it. unfortunately, my dumb parents believe in using macintosh computers, but relatively new ones. someone please tell me if the normal box version of battlefield 1942 (the one they'd sell in stores) is compatible for macs. if it ISN'T, i suppose i'd have to do some searching to find a place that sells it for macs. i'd really appreciate any help you'd give. thanks a lot.

Mac software is sold at all CompUSA stores (www.compusa.com), and of course Apple Retail stores (www.apple.com/retail)

Macs rock, but not for gaming.

The normal boxed version isn't the one you want. Aspyr publishes the Mac version.

However, because Gamespy has decided to unilaterally raise the licensing fees for non-Windows software, BF1942 doesn't support the Gamespy matchmaking.

thank you. i find it retarded that mac users such as myself have to go through fucking hell in order to get games to play. i fear i'll NEVER get to play counter strike... oh what a nightmare. oh well, thanks again. you've been really helpful.

You probably never will, no. But that's okay, because there are still a handful of the really good games that we get to partake in. Most notably The Sims, any of Blizzard's games (on the same disc as the PC version, usually!), most of id's games, many EA games, etc.

And let's not forget that Bungie's fine labors were originally Mac exclusives, and later ported to Mac. Hell, HALO was announced on a Mac.

Halo is on the Mac. I saw it with a over £30 price tag when I went into Nottingham. Whereas a Windows copy is £10 new or £7 or less second hand.
Mac people really seem to get ripped off in England when it comes to games.

I meant that Halo, before the Xbox ever came out, was shown originally on PPC hardware at an Apple press event. It was to be Bungie's big gift to the Mac world, because it was supposed to come to Mac first. Then MS bought Bungie. The port of the Xbox game to PC was handled by Gearbox, and the port of the PC game was... (checks) it looks like Westlake. What was supposed to be Mac native is a port of a port...

Mac s/w in the USA is also usually priced new the same as PC s/w, but has no presence in the used game shops. Net auctions are a slightly different story. On the other hand, software sales for mac are not being destroyed by the resale market, unlike PC.

"Then MS bought Bungie."
Hmm.... I never knew that.

Once upon a time, Halo was an RTS, too.

Halo was rewritten from the ground up when MS took over Bungie. Halo-the-game-we-ended-up-with was never going to come out on the Mac.

Ah, I know about the RTS version; the version that was initially shown at the Apple announcement was an FPS that focused on its ability to seamlessly render both indoor and outdoor environments. In the conference they showed the Master Chief battling with Covenenant ground and aerial units, infiltrating a cave, activating a holographically projected control unit and then running back outside to deal with reinforcements. Which is, you gotta admit, pretty close to the game we got.

"one of my best friends has battlefield 1492"

and they said a FPS (first person syphiluser) based on the journeys of columbus would never sell!

Man, I hate that game.

My teammates always grab the ships first, and then I gotta wait 7 months for them to spawn again.
